Washington Center First Amendment Rights

We want to take this opportunity to remind you that during your time in D.C. with the William & Mary Washington Center, you will be in the nation’s capital. You will spend time in the city, living, working, and enjoying all the wonderful things D.C. has to offer. We want you to enjoy all of your experiences, while keeping your safety, security, and health in mind.

At any time in D.C., there can be demonstrations, protests, rallies, and other forms of expressive activity. We encourage students, to the extent that they wish to, to exercise their first amendment rights to participate in these expressive activities. Usually, these expressions are peaceful, but it is important to be careful and aware of your surroundings at all times.

Remember that even in D.C., you are still a W&M student. Please always be safe and mindful as you travel around the city. Please attend any events with a buddy, wear comfortable shoes and a hat, consider bringing a mask as appropriate/required, and ID, bring snacks and water, ensure your phone is fully charged, and that other people know where you are going. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable at any point, leave the situation and make sure your buddy knows your plan.

As always, for any Study in D.C. student who would like to talk with a mental health professional, you can access local services through Parkhurst Associates Mental Health Services.
